MacArthur Foundation
In 2005, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation established a grantmaking area in Digital Media and Learning. The effort is focused on understanding how digital media is changing the way young people learn, play, socialize and participate in civic life, and in helping learning institutions adapt to this change.
The MacArthur Foundation is supporting research and projects that explore how digital media could be used to improve learning—both in schools and in less formal learning environments, such as libraries and after-school programs. To that end, the Foundation is providing funds that will be used to develop the Hive Learning Networks in Chicago and New York City and a grants program exclusively for Network members to conceive of innovative programs to connect youth interests to opportunities for lifelong learning.
